PROTECT YOUR HEARING

People with diabetes may be more likely than other people to have hearing loss, a new study shows. It may be a good idea for people with diabetes to get a hearing test, note the researchers.

Many other medical conditions contribute to hearing loss, protect your hearing as well as your health.

Turn ‘em down and turn ‘em off. That’s the advice of Dean Garstecki, a Northwestern audiologist and professor, when it comes to using those ever-present earbuds favored by iPod and MP3 music listeners everywhere.

Not only are earbuds placed directly into the ear, they can boost the sound signal by as much as six to nine decibels.

60 percent/60 minute rule. Use the MP3 devices, including iPods, for no more than about an hour a day and at levels below 60 percent of maximum volume.

Keep the cell phone volume down, don't be tempted to turn up the volume to drown out surrounding noises. Don't risk permanent damage to your hearing.
